Vienna Christmas Markets 2018

Check out our top 5 Christmas Markets in Vienna.

Vienna in December is a magical place to be. This is how Christmas should look and feel, and every other market you visit after this one will look like it's trying to catch the spirit of Vienna's Christmas Markets. Vienna is baroque at its best, it is a city bursting with culture, but when Vienna lights the town, you get a fairytale city. The atmosphere is cosy with all the stalls with handicrafts, giant decorated trees, hot dogs and schnitzels, and children's workshops. The aroma of gluhwein and chocolate covered fresh nuts will put you in the right Chrismas mood. Besides gluhwein, Vienna Christmas Markets have a rich program that will keep you and your children warm: live music, ice skating, and numerous workshops for the little ones.

Now, let's see where you can soak up the Christmas Spirit.

Vienna's top 5 Christmas Markets

Before we start the Christmas Market hopping, let us remind you Vienna is packed with architectural masterpieces and extraordinary art. That's why when in Vienna you need to visit at least two museums, we suggest the Museum of Modern Art – the mumok art, and Leopold Museum at Museumplatz. Hire a car and drive to Kegelgasse to see the famous Hundertwasser house. After you've seen enough of culture and architecture, you can check out their Christmas Markets or Christkindlmarkt as the Austrians call them.

Here are our favorites:

1. Christmas Market Rathausplatz

At the city hall, there is the most famous and popular Christmas Market. It's a really lively place to be, and if you're one of those who likes to get lost in the crowd this one is for you. It even has an ice rink in the middle of the square.

2. Christmas Market Belvedere Palace

If you don't like crowds and masses of tourists head to Belvedere palace – it's quiter and less crowdy than the one at the Rathausplatz, but with numerous stalls with culinary delights for all the foodies out there. If you have a sweet tooth, you have to try their spiced almond biscuits and food bread.

3. Christmas Market Karlsplatz

At the St. Charles Borromeo Church you can experience traditional white Christmas. This one has a true romantic touch, especially when it's snowing and the air is covered in snowflakes. Karlsplatz hosts all sorts of live concerts, from gospel to electronic music. Here you can try Austrian famous  Raclette Brot – this is a heated cheese with bread, which has a distinctive smell (so, don't try this at home), but its taste is out of this world.

4. Christmas Market Altwiener

Your child needs to see this twinkling fairy lights, although it's past his bedtime. The oldest Austrian Christmas Market Freyung is located in a picturesque square and has a true traditional feel. Stop at the Wurstelstand – stall with sausages and try their sausage with chunks of cheese – absolutely delicious.
