Taking care of your health while you travel does not mean only getting vaccines and packing your medicine bag. Health is not only the absence of disease. Being healthy is also a feeling, having the energy to live, travel, and love. Taking care of your health while you travel can not only prevent a common cold or sickness, but can actually improve your adventure.
Step No. 1: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Yes, this advice again! And trust us, you will hear it again, because it’s that important. You can prevent cramps and take care of your brain with proper hydration. By drinking enough water, you help your body flush bacteria from your system and prevent constipation. If you experienced bladder infection or constipation on your trips, drink more water.
TIP: Do you travel by plane? Keep in mind that the cabin air is super dry and many people suffer from dehydration after longer flights. And drinking alcohol above 30.000 feet doesn’t help.
Step No. 2: Use probiotics
Did you know that bacteria in your gut actually affects your mood, not just your health? Taking probiotics is a simple way to make sure that your microflora will be in a better shape. Taking probiotics on your trips can help you stay regular, which plays a big role in how you feel – physically and mentally. If you’re not a fan of capsules and food supplements, drink Kombucha or buy natural yogurt. Sauerkraut, kimchi and other fermented foods are also good sources of probiotics.
TIP: Pack probiotics with you and eat enough fibre during your adventure. Leafy greens, fresh fruits and porridge can be your saviours at home and abroad.
Step No. 3: Move your body – all the time
Our bodies are designed to move. If you’re planning a leisure trip and you’ll be staying in some tourist resort, make sure you move enough. No, that doesn’t mean you must exercise every day. Just move your body at least three times a day: in the morning, the mid-day and in the evening – for at least 20 minutes. Go for a short morning walk before your breakfast, do some water aerobics before noon and go out dancing in the evening. It’s that simple.
TIP: Even when you’re on the road or on a plane, try to move. In the air, at least flex your leg muscles for 15 times in a row. This will keep your blood moving and reduce water retention. While on the road, you can do some neck-stretches, shoulder raisers, and tummy exercises – just breathe in and get your belly-button as close to your spine as possible.
Step No. 4: Don’t neglect your diet
Most of us are a part of two extremes – we’re a foodie and want to try every yummy looking food during our trip, or we absolutely don’t care about food at all, we skip meals and eat all possible junk food, right? :) Well, diet is our best friend when trying to feel our best and make the most of our trips, so a little effort can take you far.
TIP: Pack a bag of almonds. They are an amazing snack, full of healthy fats and fibre that keeps you full while exploring the world.
Include vegetables in at least one meal per day, even if this means you order a veggie sandwich or go for a green smoothie as your snack. In some countries, they are not so keen on veggies, but keep an open mind. Order some hummus and olives for your appetiser in Istanbul, try Padrón peppers tapas with your beer in Barcelona, visit one of the amazing vegan restaurants in Berlin or order a veggie dish in any Chinese restaurant around the world.
