Planning your holidays in winter? Faro could be the ideal place for you. Winters in Faro are mild with lots of sunny days. You may not be able to take a swim, but hey, at least you and your children won’t get sunburnt. Also, if you don’t like crowded beaches, are more of an introvert and, you want to save some money for your summer vacation, Faro is the perfect destination.
Exploring Faro in winter is best since the crowds have left and it seems like you have Faro just to yourself. We advise you to start with sightseeing. And the perfect place to start is in the Faro old town.
The oldest part of the city is best described as seducing and begins at Arco da Porta Nova - the 15th-century town corridor joining the waterfront with the old town. This section of Faro town will most definitely charm you with its outstanding Town Hall and the Cathedral of Saint Mary dating back to 13th century. Best view of Faro old town is on the Cathedral’s tower and is a must. After that, you can stopover at the Municipal Museum where you’ll learn all about Faro’s history and culture.
Now that you know everything that you need to know about the town’s past, you deserve a break. Stop by at the Vila Adentro - right by the Arco da Porta Nova - and revel in their delicious traditional food.
If you’re more into bar hopping Columbus Cocktail and Wine Bar is a must. Their Mojito is to die for, but try not to become heavily intoxicated.:)
If you’re not an admirer of ancient history, food or wine, you can always go to the beach - you will have it to yourself. The most crowded and popular beaches of Portugal are now desolated and peaceful. In this time of the year you won’t need to worry about sunscreen and your children will freely explore the pools and rocks and the caves.
For those travelling with children, we recommend you also visit the Parque Zoologico de Lagos. Since it is a winter season, you will be able to see even the shiest of the ZOO inhabitants.:)
Is your bike your soulmate? Then you need to take him on a ride and explore the imposing landscape of Portugal on your own. Another possibility is to rent a bike - most of resorts and hotels have bike rentals so you can explore the Algarve region with your family.
For even more relaxing vacation go to the SPA salon, treat yourself to a comforting back massage or go to the sauna. Lay back and unwind.
