About Las Vegas

Car hire in Las Vegas, which is officially called the City of Las Vegas, but also referred to as the “Sin City” is an excellent idea. It is world-famous for its incredible variety and number of casinos, hotels and other nightlife activities. It’s truly a “city that never sleeps”.

The origin of the city dates all the way back to 1829 and the name Las Vegas actually means “the meadows” as that is what the first explorers found in the valley that later on became so popular for its entertainment opportunities. Officially it was founded as a city in 1905 and only 110 acres (45 ha) in size to the cosmopolitan metropolis spanning 135.8 sq mi (352 km2). Car hire is a must if you want to explore the entirety of the city and all that it has to offer.

As Las Vegas is located in the middle of the Nevada desert it can get very hot in the summer, as temperatures can regularly reach 100 °F (38 °C). If you are thinking of car hire in the summer, you might want to look at the convertibles available.

You might think that Las Vegas is only casinos and hotels, but that's actually not the case. They have an extensive downtown arts district, where the annual Las Vegas Film Festival takes place. Every first Friday of the month is also a monthly celebration that involves art, music and food presentation.

Driving in Las Vegas

To make sure that your car rental is completely care-free, be sure to take note of the driving regulations in Nevada. We chose the most important details for easy reference here.

  • Age limits: 21 years old is the minimum to be able to for car hire in Nevada. But we suggest you double-check with your chosen supplier because sometimes you will need to be at least 25 years old for car hire.
  • International Driving Permit: As a foreigner, car hire is possible with your valid driving license. If your driving permit is not in the English language but in Latin letters it is advisable to have International Driving Permit as well. If the permit is written in a language that does not have Latin letters (i.e. Russian, Chinese, etc.) an International Driving Permit is mandatory. Car hire will not be allowed with only your International Permit.
  • Additional papers: Passport and proof of valid insurance while driving in Turkey.
  • Additional requirements: Your vehicle needs to carry two warning triangles in case of an accident.
  • Children in the car: Children under the age of 8 must sit in a child seat.
  • Driving side of the road: Right side of the road.
  • Lights: Headlights must be in use from 20 minutes after sunset until 20 minutes before sunrise. Headlights must also be in use when you cannot see at least 1000 feet ahead of you.
  • General speed limits: Car hire is no time for speeding, so be mindful of the local limits. The speed limit on a freeway in an urban area is 65 mph (105 km/h) and on the highway its 80 mph (129 km/h).
  • Parking suggestions: Most hotels and restaurants have their own parking spots for their customers to use free of charge.

Drive your rental car around Las Vegas

If you decide to leave Las Vegas, then car hire is the perfect opportunity to take a ride outside of the city, as there are plenty of options where to go next. You could decide to drive to see Hoover Dam, the most famous dam in the world. Or you could decide that car hire is the perfect chance to go to the south part of Nevada where you have the mysterious Area 51, which is unfortunately closed of for general public (probably won't be able to spot any aliens, but who knows). You could also jump in your rental car, go sightseeing in Grand Canyon, and taking breathtaking photos right from the edge.

What to see in Las Vegas

There is so much to see that we couldn’t fit all of it on this page! Depending on how you like spending your holiday, you could rent a car and drive around the city, marveling in the numerous different shapes and colors of the hotels and other attractions scattered around the city. With the increase in the number of tourists coming to Las Vegas in the last decades, bigger and more prestigious hotels keep appearing, with all of them trying to out-do the rest with flashier colors and more unusual shapes or the programs that they offer. We chose a few of the best ones, but honestly, they are all great!
