About Fall River Downtown

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport, also known as Lisbon Portela Airport is the main airport in Portugal, positioned in the country's capital city, Lisbon. It is located approx. 4 miles/ 7 km away from the centre of Lisbon (it takes about 15 min by your hired car). Lisbon Airport features 2 terminal buildings, where Terminal 1 is the main access point for all arrivals and Terminal 2 is much smaller and dedicated exclusively to departures of low-cost flights. The Terminal 2 can be reached with a free shuttle service from Terminal 1 that runs every 10 mins, which is good to have in mind if you have to park your hired car.

History of Fall River Downtown

Lisbon airport opened in 1942 during the Second World War as a neutral airport opened to both British and German airlines. When the war ended, a new era opened for the airport, which by the end of 1946, was in use of some major airlines like KLM, Air France, Pan Am, Iberia and British European Airways. Since then, Lisbon Airport has undergone several upgrades, one of them included a new runway made for the new generation jets in the 60’. The terminal expanded in the 70’ and a bigger upgrade to the buildings and facilities started in the 80’. With the continuing expansion of the city of Lisbon, the airport is now surrounded by urban environment and a new plan of relocation was chosen. The Alcochete village was confirmed as an alternative site, where currently a military training facility is positioned. In the meanwhile, the airport operator built a new Terminal 2 and expanded the existing Terminal 1 to respond to the passenger traffic growth. In 2013, the project for a new airport was postponed and finally a decision for a continuing upgrade of the existing airport was made. In addition, Lisbon airport is named after Humberto Delgado, a late Portuguese air force general and famous politician.
