Edinburgh Airport, once known as Turnhouse Aerodrom, started off as the most northern British air defence base. First commercial flights started in 1947 with the British European Airways connecting Edinburgh with London. In the following years, Edinburgh Airport went through large extension and developmental works. The first international flight was a direct service form Edinburgh Airport to Dublin Airport. Edinburgh Airport latest extension of the passenger terminal finished in 2014. In 2016 Edinburgh Airport reached a record level of 12.3 million passengers handled in that year.
