History of Tenerife Airport North
Before this airport was ever built, the field of Los Rodeos was cleared to allow the first-ever plane to land on the island. Plane travel in outlying islands was a blessing in disguise as ships often took weeks to bring supplies which were in demand. The airport didn't exist yet, and it was running flights as early as 1930. It wasn't until five years later that a hangar was built and the field officially converted into an airstrip.
The runway has been both strengthened and extended over the years, with lighting added in 1953, which made night flights possible. In 1964 the runway was expanded to 3000m – so although it has only a single runway, it is massive enough to accommodate more than one flight and landing at once.
It was arguably a combination of the above factors and the perpetually thick fog which coats the volcanic island on the occasion that led to one of the greatest aviation disasters in known history to have taken place at the then Los Rodeos airport. Two planes had a head-on collision on the runway, killing 583, the most significant number of people ever known to be killed in a single aviation incident, and remains to be so to this day. It was this crash that led to the opening of Tenerife South airport in 1978.
