The airport opened civil operation in April, 1930 when an order was issued saying that the military installations should become a civilian airfield. The old passenger terminal had opened in 1946. Binter Canarias opened its main base at Gran Canaria in March 1989. Ryanair opened 3 bases at the airport in 2010.
