History of Funchal Airport
Officially opened in July 1964, the first flight consisted of 80 passengers. With the passage of time, the number of people traveling to Madeira increased. It served as a reason for increase in the length of runway. As the people traveling to Madeira kept increasing, a new terminal was built in 1973 which could handle 500,000 passengers. The runway was again extended to 2781 meters. The airport was named as Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in 2016. The rebranded terminal was unveiled in March 2017.
