History of Warsaw Chopin Airport

Formerly known as Okecie Airport, Warsaw Chopin Airport was renamed in 2001. It was initially built back in the early 1930s and was opened officially on 29 April 1934. In those days the airport saw around 10,000 passengers every year. Radio and electronic systems were updated in 1937 – just before WW2 brought the German invaders to the door.

The Nazi party secured the airport during the occupation of Poland, but they did add concrete and reinforcements to the runways. Unfortunately, as they were forced into retreat, they tore up these new runways to prevent the allied armies from using them. Authorities in Poland recognized the benefit of these changes and swiftly rebuilt them, leading to the original foundation of the dual runway system we know of today.

A new terminal added in the late '60s was swiftly followed by political turmoil in the '80s. It wasn't until '86 that Warsaw Chopin Airport was expanded again. Terminal B opened in 1992 just after the state gave control of the airport to the State Enterprise Polish Airports system. Since then, it has continued to thrive and grow into modern times. Nowadays, Warsaw Chopin Airport sees more than 17 million passengers every year.
