History of Chania Airport

The military airport of Crete was transferred from Maleme to Souda (Chania) in 1959. The airport began international flights in 1974. The renovation took place at the airport in 1996 when there was a need for additional space. In 2015, Chania airport was privatized along with 13 other airports. The renovation plan is expected to start in October 2017 and completion is scheduled in 2021 after the privatization. The city of Chania is 20 minutes’ drive from Chania airport.
