Christmas markets in Bruges

Bruges will leave you breathless, no matter the season, however, it is even more magical towards the end of the year, when the historic streets and canals are beautifully decorated, adding a bit of sparkle to your pictures, making them the perfect postcard to send to your loved ones.

Christmas market on the Market square

Christmas market in Bruges kicks off the festive season at the end of November and they last till January. Park your car hire in Bruges and start exploring the area around Market square, which holds the main Christmas market in the city. Strolling around the historic city centre during this holiday season will make you feel like you are walking in the winter wonderland, filled with little chalet where you can find everything from home-made waffles to mulled wine and gifts for your loved ones. The old historic buildings look just like gingerbread houses with their Christmas décor, making you feel like you just popped up in a storybook fairy-tale.

The main European Christmas market organises plenty of fun events, which you simply must visit! The biggest events take place from 21th of December till New Year’s Eve. If you are in Bruges at the end of December, make sure to check out the Flemish folkloric re-enactment of the Christmas story, which includes real-life sheep herd, a full orchestra and over a hundred actors from all over the country. Two days later, grab a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine, and enjoy the traditional Christmas concert in the city centre. Sing along with the crowd to the Christmas Carols. What a jolly good time, you will have!

The Christmas market on “Markt” is close to all the good restaurants and cafes! Take a break from the Christmas festivities and take a bite into Belgium cuisine or drink an exquisite cup of coffee. Since Belgium is most known for its chocolate (and waffles of course). So, we suggest you don’t leave Bruges without trying some of the pristine Belgium chocolate! Indulge in the best chocolates at Chocolatier Dumon or visit The Chocolate museum (called Choco Story), located a couple of minutes away from the main square. There are also amazing waffle shops, which you must check out! We suggest Chez Albert - Gauffres – Waffles, House of Waffles or Gingerbread Tea Room. We are getting hungry just by writing about them!

Looking to spoil yourself or your loved ones? Bruges got you covered! Take a stroll down Steenstraat or Geldmuntstraat, which is filled with numerous high- and low-end shops.

Christmas market at the Simon Stevinplein

Looking for the best-mulled wine at a charming location? Just a short drive down in your car hire in Bruges stands the Christmas market at Simon Stevinplein. This Christmas market is slightly smaller and less crowded than the one on the main Market square, but that does not mean it lacks any Christmas spirit. It hosts around 25 little winter chalets full of tasty Belgium snacks, and even a track with bumper cars! How cool is that? Wake up the child inside of you a take them for a spin.

Around the statue of the Flemish mathematician, Simon Stevinplein, you will find many great restaurants and local unique chocolate (Persoons Chocolate store is a must for all chocoholics) and brewery shops. Pamper your taste buds and take in all the stunning Christmas sights.

This beautiful and romantic setting is located at the southern part of the city. It is also known as the “Lake of Love” and it serves as the natural entrance into the city. The park is a perfect spot for all couples!

This Christmas market is slightly smaller than the ones on the main squares. However, the view of the market is a real treat, since it is surrounded by beautifully decorated trees and bridges. Ask the locals about the legendary romantic story of a girl named Minna and warrior Stromberg.
