Top Budapest Christmas Markets in 2019
Budapest, Hungary hosts two incredible Christmas Markets each year: the Christmas Fair on Vörösmarty Square, and the Christmas Market by Basilica. Both are exciting and entertaining in their own unique ways but remain two different events. As a result, we recommend that you take the time to visit both. There is also an amazing Christmas market located in the old city centre, which you will truly enjoy! The markets host hundreds of thousands of people annually – locals, international tourists, and travel enthusiasts from around the world. The Christmas Markets will be open this year from mid-November to the 1st of January. Here is a little run down on what you can expect from these markets with car hire in Budapest:
Christmas Fair on Vörösmarty Square
The Christmas Market on Vörösmarty Square is generally regarded as the smaller of the two Budapest Christmas Markets. But don’t let that fool you! The fair is home to some of the greatest entertainment, events, and food in the country. Drive your car hire in Budapest to Vörösmarty Square and join the locals at the Christmas celebration!
Entering a Christmas Market can be a bit intimidating – after all, with all the stuff going on, finding the best way to spend your time is a tough decision! That’s why the Christmas Markets in Budapest offer a Budapest Christmas Market Tour. The tour lasts an entire 2.5 hours and only costs 40 euro. If that’s not worth it, we don’t know what is!
The best part about the Christmas Market tour? Included in the price of the tour is an incredible wine tasting tour. Try some exquisite wines on the tour, and for those traveling with families, there are plenty of kid-friendly snack and food options to keep them excited all along the way. Try a piece of delicious cake at the Szamos pastry shops, where they have the best cakes in the city.
Christmas Market by Basilica
The Christmas Market by Basilica is the larger of the two Budapest Christmas Markets. Once again, you may have trouble deciding exactly what you want to do because there’s just too much to see all in one night (we recommend going a few times is you’re up for the adventure.)
The unique thing about the Budapest Basilica Christmas Market is their commitment to Hungarian folk art. You won’t find too many factory-produced, cliché Christmas trinkets here. Many of the merch tables are selling authentically hand-made Hungarian art and souvenirs.
The Christmas Market by Basilica is also impressive with their selection of traditional Hungarian snacks and foods. You’ll find great pastries and desserts, amazing mulled wine, and food such as sausages and roasted chestnuts.
Both Christmas Markets will have live entertainment and other events going on throughout the evening, so you’ll always have the option to sit, watch, and take a breather when it's needed!
The Budapest Christmas Markets are truly events worth experiencing. There’s so much to do in each town, it’s hard to fit it all in a single day! Luckily, the Christmas Markets offer 2.5-hour tours for just 40 euros, where you’ll explore the market, engage in some fine-wine taste-testing, and see the live events occurring during the festival.
If you are trying to find a cheap way to be transported to the Christmas Markets and around town, you can find an affordable car hire in Budapest.
